Young men are “bullet proof”. Old men glance down at their armor, riddled with patchwork of battles and campaigns that have left foreboding memories of thinly clad spaces in life. It is only the strengthening of wounds, now well healed, that make the greaves and breastplates impregnable; and such, give men courage. As Oswald Chambers said: “Either Jesus was a deceiver and Paul is deluded or some extraordinary thing happens to a man who holds on to the love of God when the odds are all against God’s character”. Who is any man to think, “Toughness” is not the primary catalyst for a character that would expect the rewards of a significant life. Like Hoot said in BlackHawk Down: “Once that first bullet goes past your head, politics and all that shit just goes right out the window.” Yessir! Who are you gonna be when the real bullets fly? All the talk, the lessons and stories told and read serve little in preparing you for the real thing; unless, something extraordinary has grabbed your gut and spirit and cinched it up to run the race. Toughness is not a macho thing, it is something way beyond that boyish perception. Toughness is the stuff that silences logic, only one thing can account for it and establish it? The love of God in Christ Jesus! As Oswald Chambers said: “Out of the Wreck I rise… every time!”. Ain’t it so!
